On Saturday 15th June Thirsk School held a huge reunion and alumni event with teachers, staff and pupils past and present from the 62 years since the school first opened their door. During the day local businesses and T&DBA Members were also invited along to network and meet with the school staff about how to build stronger links within the community.
During the meeting businesses met with Head Teacher Emma Lambden and Gordan Pentland, Assistant Head Teacher (Community Development) and Head of Sixth Form at Thirsk School.
‘’There is of course a huge link between the alumni and the business friends. Many of our local employers were once part of our school’’. Local businesses work closely with the school offering work experience, apprenticeships and employment to students straight from finishing school.
Thirsk businesses such as Sector Associates and the Barker Partnership have recently recruited past students at Thirsk School for apprenticeship positions.
‘’Our Business Friends have already given so much over the years, not least through work experience and we are grateful for the support. This year more than ever before, we have had exciting opportunities emailed into the school. Our superb Sixth form students come highly recommended and if you have an opportunity at your company let us know. Whether that be a job position, by giving our students a careers talk about what you look for in employees, offer to be a business mentor or take a student on work placement’.''
Next year during the T&DBA Expo we are planning on inviting Sixth form pupils from Thirsk School to attend and allow them to find out first hand from our local businesses and members what employers are looking for. You may find that there is potential for a new budding employee/apprentice waiting to join your business.
